Located at the heart of the Finger Lakes region, Ontario County, NY is notorious for its beautiful scenery and variety of adventures for lovers of the outdoors. If you and your pup are down for a good hike, it’s the perfect place to explore.  

With so many options spread across the area, we’ve come up with a list of the best dog-friendly hikes in Ontario County. Whether you and your companion are seasoned hikers or are looking for something new, these are our top picks. Within our list we’ve included different difficulty levels, so regardless of your experience and pace, there is something for you! Let’s jump in.

1. Grimes Glen Park – Intermediate

Located in Naples, Grimes Glen Park is a hidden gem perfect for an adventurous day out with your dog. It’s a shorter trail, approximately 1.3 miles long, and leads to two stunning waterfalls. The hike involves crossing streams and navigating through rocky terrain, so be prepared for a bit of a challenge. Make sure your dog is comfortable with water and rocks, and always keep them on a leash to ensure their safety.

2. Ontario Pathways Rail Trail – Easy

This 23-mile-long trail is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Stretching from Canandaigua to Phelps, the Ontario Pathways Rail Trail offers a mix of wooded areas, open fields, and picturesque views. The trail is mostly flat and well-maintained which makes for a nice stroll. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. There are multiple access points which allow you to choose your desired distance and terrain.

3. Clark’s Gully – Intermediate

For a more secluded and lesser-known hike, Clark’s Gully in South Bristol is an excellent choice. This 2-mile out-and-back trail follows a gully and features several small waterfalls and cascades. The trail can be a bit steep and slippery in places, so good footwear is essential. Your dog will love exploring the natural beauty of this hidden spot, but be sure to keep them on a leash and make sure they’re comfortable with water and a rocky ground.

4. Bare Hill Unique Area – Easy to Intermediate

Located in Gorham, the Bare Hill Unique Area offers a variety of trails with breathtaking views of Canandaigua Lake. Your dogs will love this hike, as it provides plenty of new sights and smells to explore.

5. Cummings Nature Center – Easy to Intermediate 

The Cummings Nature Center in Naples is part of the Rochester Museum and Science Center. It features over 15 miles of trails through forests, wetlands, and meadows. The trails are well-maintained and range from easy to moderate. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. The nature center is a great place to learn more about the local flora and fauna while enjoying a peaceful hike with your pup.

Note: Even on days when they’re closed (Mondays and Tuesdays) you can still access the trails.
